Akina Adderley & the Vintage Playboys is an Austin Soul band whose unique sound blends elements of Rock, Funk, and old-school R&B. Front person/vocalist Akina lights up the stage as "the little woman with the big voice." Granddaughter of jazz trumpet great Nat Adderley, great niece of jazz saxophone legend "Cannonball" Adderley and daughter of Nat Adderley, Jr. (producer/pianist/band leader for Luther Van Dross), Akina brings a distinguished musical pedigree to the Vintage Playboys, who are a tight group of seasoned players from an eclectic musical background.

The brainchild of four inspired musicians, AAVP is now a powerhouse 9-piece, and has become a vital part of Austin's newly resurrected "Soul Scene." The band has been playing for nearly 3 years, and has shared bills with such acts as Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Gary Clark, Jr., T-Bird & the Breaks, Pinetop Perkins, The Greyhounds, and Carolyn Wonderland. On the heels of a tremendously well-received SXSW '09 showcase, a successful taping for Radio Without Borders on Austin’s KUT 90.5 FM, and an enthusiastically welcomed debut album release, AAVP's fans and audiences are steadily gaining numbers.

  • Julian Marley<br /> Kingston, Jamaica<br /> <br /> Julian Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Barbados-born Lucy Pounder, is a naturally talented musician, singer, songwriter, and entertainer. As you would expect, this tall, slender Marley is a devout Rastafarian whose music is inspired by life and spirituality. His positive messages are delivered throughout Awake, a thought-provoking album compiled on the Ghetto Youths International label. Recorded at the Lion’s Den in Miami, Florida, and Tuff Gong in Kingston, Jamaica, the music and message presented throughout Awake is inspired by all the family who have come before.

His albums and mix sessions have taken on a broad scope of retro tinged spy grooves, bumping latin disco funk, hints of post punk electro go go, sleazy glam rock…And he never stops evolving.<br /> <br /> You can hear it in his remixes for the likes of Quincy Jones, Felix Da Housecat, The Faint, Fort Knox Five to a slew of television remodels for themes to Seasme Street, The Powerpuff Girls, The Incredibles and Yo Gabba Gabba. Scenes for Sex And The City, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty popped even more with a helping of a little Ursula as have campaigns for AT&T, Samsung and Adidas.<br /> <br /> His collaborations with Dr.Luke, Shag, Cristina, Los Amigos Invisibles, Misty Roses, Federico Aubele to name a few brought forth sheer magic on the three albums, The Now Sound of Ursula 1000, Kinda’ Kinky and Here Comes Tomorrow. All Systems Are Go Go and Ursadelica showed the world his dj skills and ear for the finest in hip shaking groovers. Undressed had it all re-imagined by electronic’s finest-Deekline, Ladytron, Product.01, Malente and more.<br /> <br /> While traveling the world dj-ing at places like Fabric, The Big Chill Festival, Shambhala or even at his home residency at APT, he takes in all his experiences and turns out his turn ons into a psychedelic brain stew.

CG also deejayed on extensive radio tours with sets on Betalounge Radio, Dublab.com, Eavesdrop Radio & Beatsauce Radio hosted by Om Records' recording artist, J-Boogie. CG has shared the stage with a wide range of talent including The Wailers, Pete Rock, Jazzanova, John Legend, Cody ChesnuTT, Spoon, Echo and the Bunnyman, Grandmaster Flash, Brad Paisley, Biz Markie, Grupo Fantasma, The Neptunes, Saul Williams, The Roots, Talib Kweli, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, KC & the Sunshine Band, Afrika Bambaataa, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Erykah Badu.<br /> <br /> He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, later moved to Houston, Texas and is currently residing in Austin, Texas.   • Aesop Rock<br /> New York, NY<br /> <br /> Aesop Rock is an American hip hop artist and producer. He was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is signed to El-P's Definitive Jux label and is a current member of The Weathermen. Regarding his name, he said: "I acquired the name Aesop from a movie I had acted in with some friends. It was my character's name and it sort of stuck. The rock part came later just from throwing it in rhymes."

Claes’s impressive production skills have taken form as an instant and relentless reaction to the absence of electronic music that shimmers with the presence of melodies – which has given him one of the most sought after epithets in the world of music; to have an own “sound”. Taking use of his skills Claes partially creates music stretching far beyond his invisible boundaries, regardless if it’s deep house or music for Swedish TV-commercials. <br /> <br /> Creating music that takes your thoughts to a late night city full of life, the sound of one of the most melodic producers in the business clearly has a distinctive touch and sense of rhythm surrounding every note finding its way to the listener.   • Mary Anne Hobbs<br /> London, England<br /> <br /> Mary Anne Hobbs is an English DJ and music journalist from Garstang, Lancashire. She is best known for her Radio 1 show on BBC, pushing next generation dubstep, grime, drum&bass, hip-hop, techno, dark dancefloor and radical electronic flavours in every form.<br /> <br /> In the 1980s, at the age of 19, she worked as a journalist for Sounds Magazine. She later went to work for the NME, before going on to help found Loaded Magazine. She got her break in radio at BBC GLR, working alongside Mark Lamarr. She then worked at XFM before going to BBC Radio 1. She shot a TV series about global biker culture ‘Mary Anne’s Bikes’ in Japan, America, Russia, India, and Europe for BBC Choice & BBC World in 2003, and presented the World Superbikes series 2005 for British Eurosport. She also compèred the Leeds Festival between 1999 and 2003.<br /> <br /> A fan of rock, heavy metal and motorbikes from an early age, she fronted the Radio 1 Rock Show and the experimental / electronic Breezeblock on BBC Radio 1 for a number of years. In September 2006 the Breezeblock name was dropped for the title ‘Experimental’, but the show retained the name of its host in the title. Most recently, Hobbs has been a notable champion of the dubstep and grime genres.<br /> <br /> Her 2 hour special ‘Dubstep Warz’ on BBC Radio 1 in January 2006 is widely regarded as the show that broke the dubstep sound globally and consequently she has become viewed by many on the Dubstep scene as an almost maternal figure. She released a groundbreaking dark electronic compilation album on Planet Mu records entitled Warrior Dubz in October 2006, drawing the sonic parallels between dubstep, grime, dark dancefloor, techno, d&b and hip hop. In June 2007, Hobbs curated the UK Dubstep showcase at the Sónar festival with Skream, Oris Jay and Kode 9, taking the sound out of club environments and onto an international festival stage in front of 8,500 people for the very first time. On 7 February 2008 the “Dubstep Souljahs” documentary she made for BBC Radio 1 aired inside Pete Tong’s In New Music We Trust show. Her second compilation album, Evangeline, was released on 16 June 2008 on Planet Mu records. This coincided with her second Sonar Festival Stage featuring Shackleton, Flying Lotus and Mala from Digital Mystikz.   • DJ Qbert<br /> San Francisco, CA<br /> <br /> Richard Quitevis, better known as DJ Qbert to fans throughout the world, has attracted attention since 1985 when audiences realized his skills on the turntables were beyond comprehension. Through years of creativity, imagination, practice, and dedication he developed the art of using the turntable as a musical instrument by inventing unimaginable styles and creating unique systems of skratching. Today turntablism continues to advance and branch out into diversified directions. History established that DJ Qbert, currently a member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (ISP), heralded a new era in the DJ/turntablist community, and helped raise this art to its new form.<br /> <br /> Heavily influenced by the styles of world-renowned jazz musician Miles Davis, famous electric guitarists Jimmy Hendrix and Les Paul, pianist Thelonius Monk, and original and innovative DJs throughout the world, DJ Qbert interprets their compositions to create sounds and styles that continue to generate a worldwide following. In the early 90's, DJ Qbert dominated the DJ scene with his talent and skills. After claiming the titles of the Disco Mixing Club (DMC) 1991 USA Champion and the 1992-1994 DMC World Champion, he was asked by the DMC founders to judge the 1995 DMC Championships instead of actually competing. In June 1998, DJ Qbert, along with another member of ISP, MixMaster Mike, received the DMC DJ Hall of Fame award for outstanding contributions to the competition and more importantly, the industry.<br /> <br /> The most documented DJ in the world, DJ Qbert has been featured in numerous local and national publications including Details, XXL, Spin, Jazziz, and the Bay Area Magazine (BAM), as well as international magazines and newspapers. In January 1998, DJ Qbert and the ISP crew graced the cover of the highly circulated URB magazine.<br /> <br /> Also in 1998 DJ Qbert appeared in two international movies: Hang The DJ and Modulations. Both films appeared in highly respected film festivals. The former was shown at the Cannes Film Festival held in Cannes, France, and the latter emerged at the Sundance Festival in Colorado. The documentary Hang The DJ, featured DJ Qbert and his unbelievable techniques. His impact on the world DJ culture and the industry has influenced artists not only in the hip-hop genre, but in all music categories. Modulations, a film documenting the history and culture of electronic music highlighted DJ Qbert and his skills on the turntable.<br /> <br /> In November 1998, DJ Qbert released his solo debut album Wave Twisters. This concept album, presents a story about an entire civilization residing in inner space, and the only form of communication is through the sounds of skratching. It will be followed by a full-length animated film, which is expected to premier in the summer of 2000. This film is the world's first hip-hop concept-album cartoon, which adds to the uniqueness and superiority of DJ Qbert's album Wave Twisters. DJ Qbert is considered the greatest DJ/turntablist in the world and of all time. His album Wave Twisters captured audiences worldwide. This album delivers DJ Qbert's solo improvisations, along with songs created through breaking all types of instruments into intricate symbols.   • DJ OBaH<br /> New York City, New York<br /> <br /> DJ OBaH turned a family legacy into a profession, becoming a rising industry music producer and highly sought after NYC DJ. OBaH stands for OldskoolBeatsAndHarmonies for a very good reason... the son of veteran NYC DJ/Record Dealer, Baba Chico, DJ OBaH had the world's best funk, jazz & soul records at his fingertips. Armed with his father's epic record collection, OBaH quickly made his mark on the NYC club scene, becoming the resident DJ at several nightclubs in his native Brooklyn.<br /> <br /> Quickly gaining respect and a solid fan base, his first big break came courtesy of world-renowned producer Rich Medina, who invited OBaH to spin at his weekly party at APT in the meatpacking district of NYC. Since then, OBaH has spun in well over 50 venues in NYC, across the U.S. and Europe and has DJ'd private parties for Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, Donna Karan and many other A-list celebrities. His talents have also been commissioned by such companies as Louis Vuitton, Vogue magazine, DKNY Jeans, Yahoo, Getty Images. Live performances by hip hop legends Krs-one, Brand Nubian and an impressive list of international bands and DJ’s.<br /> <br /> DJ OBaH continues to spin on a weekly basis, produce remixes as well as original compositions for television and film. His tracks have been featured on networks such as Mtv, Bravo, HBO. He can also be heard on the Giant Step jukebox radio, as host of his own show, Recycled Funk. OBaH is also employed as a DJ instuctor at Dubspot, school for dj and music production located in NYC. He takes his "formative education" with him wherever he goes.
  • Scuba<br /> London, UK<br /> <br /> Scuba is the alias of Paul Rose, founder of foundation Dubstep labels Hotflush and Scuba Recordings. His early shows on pirate radio in London led to a close involvement with the beginnings of the scene that became known as Dubstep. The debut Hotflush release hit the street in 2003 and the label has gone on to become one of the most distinctive and innovative Dubstep labels. With a catalogue of over a dozen singles featuring scene leaders such as Shakelton, Benga, DJ Distance, Boxcutter, Search and Destroy, Toasty Slaughter Mob and Vex’d to name a few, Scuba is considered a Dubstep visionary who’s own production explores the nuances of a style still pregnant with possibility.<br /> <br /> The Scuba sound has developed into a fusion of towering bass, electronic melodies and fluttering emotive soundscapes. Ranging from crunching Electro-Dubstep with massive sub-sledgehammer snares and speaker-shattering halfstep breakbeats that recall both early 90s Hardcore rave's euphoria and more considered breakouts to stripped down propulsive bass variations that continue dubstep's love affair with Minimal Techno and electronic melodic minimalism.<br /> <br /> Since 2005 he has released a slew of innovative tracks that defy the norm of the mainstream Dubstep scene, on Hotflush and other labels including Soul Jazz. His contribution to 2007’s revered Space & Time compilation on hotflush once again challenges the boundaries of Dubstep, a producer not content to let the genre wallow within its boundaries
