Del The Funky Homosapien
Oakland, CA

Telling stories about more innocent misadventures than his hardcore hip-hop counterparts, Del the Funky Homosapien was a precocious 17 year old when he released his first album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, in 1991 on Elektra. Produced by his cousin, gangsta archetype Ice Cube, the album introduced to the rap world Del's charismatic, sing-along rap style and everyday lyrics that had served him well for years in the Bay Area underground. From his hometown of Oakland, California, Del had been rhyming with his friends known as the Hieroglyphics crew--Casual, A-Plus, Tajai, and the Souls of Mischief--since grade school, shunning the hard gangsta approach in favor of good-time, off-kilter rhyming. "Del's like the antithesis of the jiggy aesthetic," producer/label executive Dante Ross, who first signed the young rapper to Elektra in 1990 and remained a close friend, told Charles Aaron of Spin. "But as far as skills, he's up there with anybody."
• The Glitch Mob
Los Angeles, CA

The Glitch Mob is a four man musical collaboration with roots from San Francisco and Los Angeles. What initially started as a joke/loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, Kraddy and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back to back time slots. This eventually led to the four man sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and infinitely complex rhythms. A proverbial Voltron effect on stage. Taking influences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been "slaying" audiences world wide. Their live sets reinvent the dj “tag-team” concept with four performers on stage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving their own sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window. The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles.
London, England

Mary Anne Hobbs is an English DJ and music journalist from Garstang, Lancashire. She is best known for her Radio 1 show on BBC, pushing next generation dubstep, grime, drum&bass, hip-hop, techno, dark dancefloor and radical electronic flavours in every form.

In the 1980s, at the age of 19, she worked as a journalist for Sounds Magazine. She later went to work for the NME, before going on to help found Loaded Magazine. She got her break in radio at BBC GLR, working alongside Mark Lamarr. She then worked at XFM before going to BBC Radio 1. She shot a TV series about global biker culture ‘Mary Anne’s Bikes’ in Japan, America, Russia, India, and Europe for BBC Choice & BBC World in 2003, and presented the World Superbikes series 2005 for British Eurosport. She also compèred the Leeds Festival between 1999 and 2003.

A fan of rock, heavy metal and motorbikes from an early age, she fronted the Radio 1 Rock Show and the experimental / electronic Breezeblock on BBC Radio 1 for a number of years. Most recently, Hobbs has been a notable champion of the dubstep and grime genres.

Her 2 hour special ‘Dubstep Warz’ on BBC Radio 1 in January 2006 is widely regarded as the show that broke the dubstep sound globally and consequently she has become viewed by many on the Dubstep scene as an almost maternal figure. She released a groundbreaking dark electronic compilation album on Planet Mu records entitled Warrior Dubz in October 2006, drawing the sonic parallels between dubstep, grime, dark dancefloor, techno, d&b and hip hop. In June 2007, Hobbs curated the UK Dubstep showcase at the Sónar festival with Skream, Oris Jay and Kode 9, taking the sound out of club environments and onto an international festival stage in front of 8,500 people for the very first time. On 7 February 2008 the “Dubstep Souljahs” documentary she made for BBC Radio 1 aired inside Pete Tong’s In New Music We Trust show. Her second compilation album, Evangeline, was released on 16 June 2008 on Planet Mu records. • Gaslamp Killer
Los Angeles, CA

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. As a producer, the Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, for instance, a split single with Free the Robots, “The Killer Robots,” on Obey Records in 2008 and an EP, My Troubled Mind, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records in 2009.
 • Rusko
London, UK

Christopher Mercer, aka Rusko was born in Leeds in 1985 to a musical family. From day one Rusko was surrounded by music. Whether it be his family’s pianos, guitars, banjos and saxophones…or the heavy reggae and dub sound systems of later years in Leeds, music has always been an integral part of Rusko’s life.

After graduating from Leeds university with a degree in musical performance, Rusko discovered the world of dubstep through Sub Dub and a debut appearance from the Digital Mystikz. Having spent the past 10 years making future dub alongside Leeds very own Iration Steppas, Rusko connected with the sound and moved down to London to further advance his musical opportunities with Sub Soldiers label mate Caspa.

Veering away from the dark, serious side of the sound Rusko brought a highly driven energy and fun approach to the dubstep massive and quickly coined his own take on the genre and turned the scene upside down. His sound appealed to many people outside of the dubstep world as his productions became more adventurous in formula, sound and energy. His huge hit Cockney Thug has been played by everyone from Pete Tong, Switch, Diplo and Santogold, and has been remixed by Buraka Som Sistema, Diplo, Caspa, Drop the Lime and the Scratch Perverts.

Now at 23, Rusko is only in first gear, with collaborations on the table with the likes of Switch, Diplo , Yo Majesty and Wiley, the future sure is looking bright. Already setting the radio airwaves alight with his own productions and remixes of artists like Adele and A-Trak featuring Kid Sister, Rusko is headed in the right directions. Onwards, upwards and far beyond what most producers can dream of.
