• Peanut Butter Wolf
Los Angeles, CA

Among the true talents in the late-'90s new skool of old-school hip-hop, Peanut Butter Wolf began DJing as a teenager and became quite an entrepreneur at his San Jose, CA, high school, selling mix tapes of his turntable work. He debuted on wax in 1989 with "You Can't Swing This" on All Good Vinyl, recorded with a smooth MC named Lyrical Prophecy. By the end of the year, PBW began working with MC Charizma, and the two gelled quickly, perfecting their skills at block parties and shows with the likes of the Pharcyde, House of Pain, and Nas. Just after the duo gained a record deal with Hollywood Basic in 1992, Charizma was shot and killed.

Unsure of where to turn without the talents of his MC, Peanut Butter Wolf began issuing strictly instrumental work, including his first release, Peanut Butter Breaks on Heyday Records. Tracks followed for the Bomb label (on the excellent Return of the DJ compilation) as well as Om Records. Though the MC had ruled the world of hip-hop since the mid-'80s, selected DJ crews began to get exposure in the dance underground by the late '90s, including DJ Shadow, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and the X Men (whose name was later changed to the X-Ecutioners, for copyright reasons). Peanut Butter Wolf joined the elite as well, recording for dance labels 2 Kool (the Lunar Props EP) and Ninja Tune (remixing the Herbaliser) as well as contributing production work for fellow old-schooler Kool Keith.

With the foundation of his Stones Throw label, PBW began developing tracks recorded earlier with MC Charizma and released work by another Bay Area crew, Fanatik. His debut production LP, My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, appeared in 1999. The year 2002 brought two excellent compilations, The Best of Peanut Butter Wolf and the Stones Throw 7" collection Jukebox 45's. In 2003 he put out Badmeaninggood, Vol. 3 and the next year he produced a compilation CD/DVD of his label's artists, Stones Throw 101. Since then he has focused more of his energy in building up Stones Throw, though he still performs the occasional DJ gig in Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. Peanut Butter Wolf is also a member of the L.A. hip-hop orchestra Breakestra. To celebrate the decade his label had been in existence, Chrome Children was released in collaboration with Adult Swim in 2006, and Stones Throw: Ten Years in early 2007.
• Madlib
Los Angeles, CA

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate-digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects.
• Rebirth Brass Band
New Orleans, LA

The Rebirth Brass Band rose from the streets of New Orleans to international renown with a mix of the brass-band tradition and a refreshingly modern sensibility. The Rebirth Brass Band mastered the traditional jazz sound of their hometown and then melded it with funk, R&B and, most recently, hip-hop, they are as capable with spirituals and rags as it is with brass-band boogie.

Formed in the early ‘80’s by Philip Frazier, Keith Frazier and Kermit Ruffins, all former schoolmates, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. The band is a regular highlight of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, where their 1982 performance led to a record deal, and a strong loyal audience following. As always, the Rebirth Brass Band promises to get the party started Crescent City-style and then take listeners on a stirring ride through traditions old and new.

Kermit Ruffins has moved on to form his own band The Barbeque Swingers, and has himself become quite the local celebrity. Rebirth's longstanding regular Tuesday night gig at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans has become a mainstay on the city’s music itinerary. Their drummer Derrick Tabb, was in 2009 picked as a finalist for the CNN Heroes award, for his founding commitment to the Roots of Music after school program in the city of New Orleans.

Rebirth, as they are affectionately known in the Big Easy, is always on call and have earned their reputation by showing up and “taking it to the streets.”

In the ongoing wake of the disaster that was/is Katrina, Rebirth has taken become a role model for young musicians to look up to in learning about and maintaining their long and rich musical heritage.

The current line up of the band is Phil Frazier-Tuba, Keith Frazier-Bass Drum, Derek Shezbie-Trumpet, Glen Andrews- Trumpet, Stafford Agee-Trombone, Corey Henry-Trombone, Derrick Tabb-Snare Drum, Vincent Broussard-Saxophone, and Chaderick Honore-Trumpet
• Del The Funky Homosapien
Oakland, CA

Telling stories about more innocent misadventures than his hardcore hip-hop counterparts, Del the Funky Homosapien was a precocious 17 year old when he released his first album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, in 1991 on Elektra. Produced by his cousin, gangsta archetype Ice Cube, the album introduced to the rap world Del's charismatic, sing-along rap style and everyday lyrics that had served him well for years in the Bay Area underground. From his hometown of Oakland, California, Del had been rhyming with his friends known as the Hieroglyphics crew--Casual, A-Plus, Tajai, and the Souls of Mischief--since grade school, shunning the hard gangsta approach in favor of good-time, off-kilter rhyming. "Del's like the antithesis of the jiggy aesthetic," producer/label executive Dante Ross, who first signed the young rapper to Elektra in 1990 and remained a close friend, told Charles Aaron of Spin. "But as far as skills, he's up there with anybody."
