Los Angeles, CA<br />
<br />
The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. As a producer, the Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, for instance, a split single with Free the Robots, “The Killer Robots,” on Obey Records in 2008 and an EP, My Troubled Mind, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records in 2009.
  • J.Rocc<br />
Los Angeles, CA<br />
<br />
One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles.<br />
<br />
In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib's live shows since the early 2000's, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group's live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.<br />
<br />
J. Rocc is currently working on a solo album for Stones Throw.
  • Akina Adderley & the Vintage Playboys<br />
Nina Simone Tribute<br />
Austin, TX<br />
<br />
Akina Adderley & the Vintage Playboys is an Austin Soul band whose unique sound blends elements of Rock, Funk, and old-school R&B. Front person/vocalist Akina lights up the stage as "the little woman with the big voice." Granddaughter of jazz trumpet great Nat Adderley, great niece of jazz saxophone legend "Cannonball" Adderley and daughter of Nat Adderley, Jr. (producer/pianist/band leader for Luther Van Dross), Akina brings a distinguished musical pedigree to the Vintage Playboys, who are a tight group of seasoned players from an eclectic musical background.<br />
<br />
The brainchild of four inspired musicians, AAVP is now a powerhouse 9-piece, and has become a vital part of Austin's newly resurrected "Soul Scene." The band has been playing for nearly 3 years, and has shared bills with such acts as Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Gary Clark, Jr., T-Bird & the Breaks, Pinetop Perkins, The Greyhounds, and Carolyn Wonderland. On the heels of a tremendously well-received SXSW '09 showcase, a successful taping for Radio Without Borders on Austin’s KUT 90.5 FM, and an enthusiastically welcomed debut album release, AAVP's fans and audiences are steadily gaining numbers.<br />
<br />
AAVP’s eponymous debut full-length record was released on March 28, 2009. The album is available on iTunes and CDBaby.com, as well as in Austin at Waterloo Records, Antone’s Records, and Cheapo Disks. SHAKE IT LIKE A TAMBOURINE!

  • Brownout<br />
Austin, TX<br />
<br />
If ever a band could boast having a complex genealogical tree, that band is Brownout. The eight-piece, Latin funk ensemble based in Austin, Texas, is both offspring and germinating seed to Grammy-nominated Grupo Fantasma. The latter in turn traces its roots to when Austin based Blue Noise Band and The Blimp, from booming border town of Laredo, Texas, converged in its conception.<br />
<br />
Brownout may well be Grupo Fantasma’s psychedelic Latin funk little brother, an offshoot of the collective that regularly backs Prince, its latest incarnation, or even its alter ego. What they are not is the sprawling conjunto’s side project. Brownout has taken Grupo Fantasma’s funk roots and blown them up. In the process they’ve taken on a life and developed a unique sound all their own. Aguilas and Cobras, the group’s new album on Six Degrees Records (9/15/09), stands as testament to their one of a kind evolution.<br />
<br />
Playing over 150 shows per year, including backing Prince at Coachella and on the “Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” Grupo Fantasma has performed all over the world, in music festivals such as Bonnaroo and the New Orleans Jazz Festival, and played for U.S. troops stationed in Kuwait and Iraq. Somehow they even found the time to release a Grammy-nominated full-length, Sonidos Gold.<br />
<br />
Then came Brownout, a return to their coming of age forays into funk. Mostly instrumental, the band takes its cues from James Brown's J.B.'s and San Francisco's Malo, the Seventies act fronted by Carlos Santana's brother Jorge, but they infuse it with their particular vibe of border music hybridity and generous brushstrokes of trippy psychedelia.<br />

  • The Glitch Mob<br />
Los Angeles, CA<br />
<br />
The Glitch Mob is a four man musical collaboration with roots from San Francisco and Los Angeles. What initially started as a joke/loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, Kraddy and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back to back time slots. This eventually led to the four man sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and infinitely complex rhythms. A proverbial Voltron effect on stage. Taking influences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been "slaying" audiences world wide. Their live sets reinvent the dj “tag-team” concept with four performers on stage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving their own sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window. The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles.<br />

  • Lipp Service<br />
New York, NY<br />
<br />
From Tacoma to San Francisco to Chicago to Los Angeles to New York, producer Eliot Lipp has always followed the music. Creating songs that, according to XLR8R, "tickle days after the last spin," he combines hip-hop influenced drum programming with the vintage synthesizer sounds found in the cutting edge electronic music of the 70s. Eliot Lipp's early career saw him vigorously honing his skill on the club circuit where his fresh and daring take on hip-hop impressed Scott Herren (Prefuse 73) so much that he put out his 2004 debut LP on Eastern Developments. Releases on Hefty, Mush, and 1320 have followed and meanwhile Eliot”s hectic tour schedule puts him in front of fresh faces to showcase his skills. Now looking for the next evolution in his live show Eliot has launched his band Lipp Service. The concept is simple, live drums and bass along with Eliot's signature Live P.A. stylings. The product is a dynamic genre bending mix of musical styles with a heightened live concert experience. The backing members are Alex Botwin and Lane Shaw who together make up two thirds of live electronic mainstay's Pnuma Trio. The Pnuma guys are no strangers to the live music circuit having kept up a relentless touring schedule, which has taken them as far as Australia and Japan in the last few years.
